The first DISARM Newsletter

Today we shared our first newsletter where you will find links to our introductory video, Facebook-based discussion group and registration for our international workshop on the 3rd December.
We also invite you to complete a short survey to let us know where you think more research focus is needed to improve the health of livestock and combat antibiotic resistance.

DISARM is hosting its first International Workshop!

Participate Online or Join us in Brussels

December 3 @ 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm CET

In early December, we will be presenting our ongoing work from the DISARM project. Our focus will be on the Community of Practice, the online discussion forum where multiple actors across livestock sectors share ideas and strategies to combat antibiotic resistance. We will also look at the on-farm case studies that will start in January 2020. At the end there will be a Q&A session where people can ask their questions live and online.

DISARM’s Third Project Meeting

The third project meeting was hosted by Innovation for Agriculture in Coventry, UK. We had useful, productive and necessary discussions about how to progress further with our work. We also engaged in some external networking. Gwyn Jones from RUMA (Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance) joined us for lunch and spoke about how the UK farming industry has proactively approached antimicrobial resistance and emphasised that it is important for all sectors and countries to engage on the issue. We also visited Harper Adams University for a tour of their pig, sheep, beef and dairy units to hear about their animal health achievements and research projects.

The DISARM Community of Practice has Reached 100 Members!

The DISARM Community of Practice (CoP) is a gathering of various stakeholders in livestock farming (from the farm to the products) concerned by antibiotic resistance management. It will be composed of farmers, veterinarians, advisors, researchers, industry actors etc. It is a place to share experiences, discuss various issues linked to a better use of antibiotics, and identify and test new practices. The idea is that the complementary skills, various points of view and contexts will promote circulation of information, and a spread of good practices.

The Community of Practice takes place as a Facebook Group. You can join now to discuss your challenges, share best practices, or get inspired by solutions from other contexts to discover, discuss and co-create adapted best practices. It is an opportunity to exchange with other European field actors on common issues and discover new practices.

Our members are busy choosing some key areas to be discussed in this group. In September, we will announce the 10 focal topics that will be discussed and studied inside the CoP. Join us to be part of the conversation!

DISARM to Collaborate with ROADMAP

A number of our consortium attended the ROADMAP kick-off meeting in June. ROADMAP: Rethinking of Antimicrobial Decision Systems in the Management of Animal Production is an exciting EU research project in response to a call for socio-economic research on antimicrobial resistance. We are excited to see how their project progresses and look forward to fruitful collaboration with them.

DISARM’s Second Project Meeting

ACTA hosted the DISARM consortium for our second project meeting in Paris. This two-day meeting was an important opportunity to discuss the project and our various activities. We also had the pleasure of meeting some members of our external project advisory board: Mandy Nevel (AHDB, UK), Jeanette van de Ven (Chair Animal Health and goat milker, Netherlands), Dr Elisabeth Erlacher-Vindel (World Organisation for Animal Health OiE), and Edgar Garcia Manzanilla (Teagasc, Ireland).

DISARM’s Kick-Off Meeting

January 2019
Hosted by ILVO in snowy Ghent, Brussels, our project coordinators Erwin Wauters and Frederik Leen did a fantastic job of outlining the project. It was lovely to get to know the people we will collaborate with on the DISARM project and we are excited to get started!
