Agro-ecological transition of livestock farming systems requires strong changes in animal health management, toward more preventive approaches of livestock practices, e.g. feeding management, and less use of medical inputs for animal. These systemic changes concern farm managers but also their advisors and teachers. In this study, surveys have been made to study the particular needs of farmers and their advisors for education, both professional and academic. These surveys were realised with advisors and farmers of different educational backgrounds, from pork and dairy sector. Results of these surveys show a very small contribution of initial and academic education for useful knowledge on health management , expressed by farmers and advisors ; they also show strong needs addressed toward professional training, that should combine peer exchanges of practises, practical exercises and specialized knowledge coming from animal health experts.

The relationship between farmers’ attitude and on farm practices has been demonstrated. A trial to test dam vaccination on calf protection has permitted to survey 36 dairy farmers on their perception of this practice: 6 months before the trial (2017), 77% of them had a preventive perception of the vaccination but they associated it to rather curative practices. Their implication through the trial has improved their understanding of calf passive immunity and of the role of colostrum into this process (75% of answers), but also the importance of the delay for colostrum intake (72%) and of the quality of colostrum (65%). After the trial, the farmers declared to be determined to change their practices regarding the distribution of colostrum to improve the health of calves at farm. These results confirmed the benefits of practical application to facilitate the changes in attitude and practices.

The impact of the concomitant vaccination of cows to protect the young calf against neonatal diarrhoea and respiratory diseases was tested: in 40 dairy farms, 819 dams were vaccinated at drying with recommendation to distribute to their calf 4L of colostrum within 6 hours after calving. 211 calves of those vaccinated cows and 214 calves without known history were compared in 10 veal calves fattening farms. Within the first 45 days, calves from vaccinated cows received 1 antibiotic treatment less than other calves and less antibiotic matter. The impact was visible from the arrival at fattening unit: 1.8 less risk for vaccinated cow calves to show clinical respiratory disease, and a higher weight (1 kg) at equivalent ages. As a consequence, the mortality of calves from vaccinated cows was lower.

Locomotor problems in dairy cows have been on the increase in recent years. This is due to changes in housing systems, feeding systems, workload of farmers and finally herd groupings which favour the spread of Mortellaro disease. A method of intervention in farms with lameness problems has been developed by pooling the expertise of different livestock advisors and vets. This method is described in the document: “Intervention method for the control of lameness in dairy herds”. It specifies the different parts of the intervention in 3 booklets : a: general presentation of the method and the stages of the intervention b: presentation of methods for investigating risk factors related to housing, food and sanitary conduct c: collection of sample support documents for operational intervention. The main originality of this intervention document in a dairy cow farm facing lameness is that it gathers all the intervention methodology from the preparation to the monitoring of the situation.

In small ruminants, management tools for the control of mammary infections must be rethought, taking into account their animal specificities as well as management, equipment or work organization. The study integrated the inputs of observation, as a central element of the work of breeders and advisors, and various innovative technological solutions or automated recordings now available or in development as diagnostic tools (molecular bacteriology, cell counts, infrared spectra, clinical examination of the udder and the teat) and in terms of milking ability and milking conditions (use of milk kinetics recordings or vacuum fluctuations and thermography). In a context of antibiotics use reduction, criteria for the selection of animals to be cured (or culled) have been proposed. New phenotypes have been explored for a better understanding of the risk factors associated with milking. Finally, after studying the genetic progress and economic impact, the inclusion of new traits in selection schemes was carried out (somatic cell counts) or proposed to improve the resistance of animals to mammary infections.

The development of both innate and adaptive immunity at the mucosal surface is critical in preventing the potential harmful effects of intestinal pathogenic agents. Strategies aiming at stimulating natural host defences through the use of substances able to modulate immune functions have gained increasing interest in animal research, and different bioactive components a priori sharing those properties have been the subject of in vivo nutritional investigations in pig. Among these, yeast derivates (b-glucans and mannans) are able to interact with immune cells, particularly phagocytic cells. This review also highlights the limitations of some of the published in vivo studies on the immunomodulatory activity of certain feed additives. Among those, the lack of standardisation of extracts and the heterogeneity of piglet-rearing conditions (e.g. exposure to pathogens) are likely the most limiting.

This report highlights the extent of quantitative reduction which can be achieved, both in overall antimicrobial use, and especially of Critically Important Antibiotics (CIA’s) whose efficacy must be preserved for use in human medicine. EuroDairy gathered intelligence through its partners and wider networks, organized a cross border workshop, farmer exchange visits, technical webinars, and linked to regional Operational Groups focussed on reducing antibiotics. The only way to sustainably reduce the risk of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is through an integrated approach to disease control, which sustainably improves animal health. Hotspots for antibiotic use are treatment for mastitis (including dry cow therapy), lameness and foot health, respiratory disease and young stock health.
