A survey was carried out among 46 dairy sheep farmers to better understand measures put in place in the event of pathologies in young lambs, both in terms of antibiotic use and preventive actions. When asked about their practices regarding the use of antibiotics in lambs, the farmers expressed the importance they attach to the feeding and housing conditions of animals in order to prevent health problems. The use of antibiotics remains punctual and reasoned. The most common farming practices used to reduce the use of antibiotics in lambs on the surveyed farms are : • A balanced diet, including mineral feed, throughout gestation and preparation for lambing, • The lambing hutting, the creation of the mother-younger bond and the assurance of an important and fast colostrum intake, • Homogeneous batches of lambs in terms of age and weight, • Good environmental conditions in the building and sufficient litter.

Perceptions and attitudes towards antibiotic resistance among general practitioners, hospital physicians, veterinarians, pig farmers and the general public were compared. Farmers were predominantly satisfied with existing solutions. Farmers had three times better basic knowledge of antibiotic resistance and knew twice as many people with multiple drug resistance organism problems than the general public. They also received information on antibiotic resistance more often from their veterinarians than patients did from their doctors. This study reveals considerable differences in perceptions and attitudes to antibiotic resistance among the groups investigated. Results promote mutual understanding and thus support the One Health approach.

In the dairy sector, antibiotics are mostly used for the control and treatment of mastitis. A study in Western France evaluate effectiveness, strengths and weaknesses of an innovative training program: one classroom-training day, virtual classrooms, and an individual support with the farmer. Two groups of farmers addressed two different themes, depending on their herds’ udder health: (1) Mastitis prevention during lactation for herds with frequent clinical mastitis(2) Selective instead of blanket dry cow therapy for herds with good udder health. Some farmers appreciated the virtual classroom training method because it was flexible (frequency, timetable, etc.) and little time consuming. However, connection or computing logistic problems made the participation in the virtual classrooms difficult. For the “prevention” group, results also showed limited improvement of knowledge, perception and practices of farmers. Improvement of knowledge and perception was significant. Both exposed and non-exposed farmers did improve their practices of antibiotic use at dry-off.

A French survey of 51 dairy farms showed that the advisory relationships between farmers and farm advisors and between farmers and veterinarians influenced the implementation of selective dry cow therapy, but had very little effect on the use of alternative medicines by farmers, who were more willing to experiment alternative medicines than their advisors. The dairy farming system had very little influence on antibiotic use: some misuse of antibiotics was found whatever the farming system. Systematic dry cow therapy was also a widespread habit in all dairy farming systems except organic. The use of alternative medicine was common in all farming systems.

Increasing awareness of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in human beings and veterinary medicine has raised concerns over the issue of overuse of antimicrobials. Their use in food-producing animals is being challenged because of the perceived risk from the transfer of resistant pathogens from animals to human beings. This study used focus groups to explore the drivers and motivators behind antimicrobial use and prescribing by veterinary surgeons and farmers in the pig industry in the UK. Studies of two veterinary and four farmer focus groups were undertaken, each with between three and six participants, in three regions of high pig density in England. Certain themes, both within and across, the veterinary and farmer focus groups were identified. Veterinary opinion was such that ‘external pressures’, such as pressure from clients, legislation and public perception, were influenced prescribing behaviour, whereas, farmers farming systems and management to be greater drivers of antimicrobial use tendencies.

Test-day somatic cell counts (SCC) before drying off and after calving were used to determine cow’s udder health across the dry period and to study the impact on the performance in the next lactation. Test-day data before drying off were explored to evaluate their diagnostic ability to detect noninfected cows at the time of drying off in 15 commercial dairy herds with an adequate udder health management. We confirmed that SCC information via milk recording is capable of predicting the absence of IMI with major pathogens at dry-off, yet (an estimate of) the herd prevalence of subclinical mastitis, the cow’s milk yield and parity impact the estimates of the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values to some extent. We concluded that implementing selective dry cow treatment to reduce the antimicrobial use on commercial dairy herds, using strict selection criteria and test-day information, is possible without jeopardizing udder health or milk yield.

The farmer field school (FFS) is a concept for farmers’ learning, knowledge exchange, and empowerment. In Denmark, a research project focusing on explicit nonantibiotic strategies involves farmers who have actively expressed an interest in phasing out antibiotics from their herds through promotion of animal health. An FFS approach was adapted to Danish conditions and named “stable schools.” A facilitator was connected to each group whose role was to write the meeting agenda together with the host farmer, direct the meeting, and write the minutes to send to the group members after the meeting. Complex farming situations were the focus of all groups and in this context, problems were identified and solutions proposed based on each farmer’s individual goals. In this article, we describe the experiences of 4 stable school groups (each comprising farmers and a facilitator), and the process of building a concept suitable for Danish organic dairy farming.

The aim of this study was to explore the social factors influencing farmers’ decision-making on the duration of antibiotic treatment of clinical mastitis. Extended treatment is perceived as part of the social norm of “being a good farmer.” The participants’ perception was that mastitis is not treated “thoroughly” if clinical symptoms were still visible at the time of cessation of treatment. Groups with whom the farmer identifies and regularly communicates face to face, such as other farmers, the herd veterinarian, and other farm advisors, confirm the farmer’s judgment on extending treatment and influences him or her toward socially accepted behavior. Legislation may reduce antibiotic usage, if doable and controllable. Evidence-based information on treatment efficacy or practical on-farm decision support indicating when to end treatment may be able to change social norms of “thorough” treatment, especially when communicated by a group such as veterinarians.

The aim of this study was to measure the influence of factors from social theories on veterinarians’ decision to prescribe antimicrobials to sheep and beef farmers without a clinical consultation. Respondents were presented with eight scenarios where a farmer asks for antimicrobials at the veterinary practice. Seven further factors, identified from constructs of social theories, were included in the scenarios. The factors case type, farmer relationship, other veterinarians in practice, time pressure, habit, willingness to pay, and confidence in the farmer, were significant in the decision to prescribe. Confidence in the farmer was the most influential variable. Factors about vets that had significant influence on the decision to prescribe were agreeableness personality score, region of veterinary practice, and presence of a small animal department. These influential factors could be considered to target interventions in farm animal veterinary practice for improved antimicrobial stewardship.
