Summary:
This study aimed to investigate the impact of welfare standards and biosecurity on AMU in beef cattle. Data on performance traits and AMU were collected over a 3.5 year time from 27 specialised beef farms and a treatment incidence was calculated using the defined daily dose for animals. An on-farm assessment was carried out. The highest average score was obtained for the welfare section (76%) followed by emergency management (39%) and biosecurity (24%). This suggests that major focus on strategies for the implementation of biosecurity measures and emergency management is needed, due to the low scores reported. A statistically significant lower AMU was observed with improved level of welfare. These results may be helpful for farm benchmarking and highlight the importance of improved animal welfare for an efficient antimicrobial stewardship

Antibiotics are widely used in animal husbandry, and various types of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are frequently detected in livestock waste around the world. Conventional livestock waste treatment processes do not completely remove ARGs, resulting in their release to soil and water environments. Various exposure routes of these ARGs to humans, including inhalation and ingestion of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) that harbor them, may be contributing to the rise in resistant clinical infections that are increasingly difficult to treat with antibiotics. In this review, we assess the occurrence and variability of ARGs in livestock wastes and their potential propagation pathways to human pathogens.

This research did record feeding time by placing cameras by the feed bunk and using different digital systems. Lameness was scored as well as body conditions score. The results support the hypothesis that lameness during the dry period is associated with transition diseases. Lameness identified 2 mo before calving was associated with increased risk of transition diseases, highlighting the importance of screening cows for lameness around dry-off. One of the mechanisms through which lameness may be associated with TD is through decreased feeding time; throughout the dry period, lame cows spent less time feeding than sound cows, and lower feeding time was in turn associated with higher odds of transition diseases. These results suggest that reducing lameness during the dry period and avoiding over conditioning at dry-off may improve transition health.
